Day 2 – Across Shira Plateau and into Shira 2 Camp (originally posted July 2012)

SICK COOK: we are washed and ready for dinner which is on it’s way. Unfortunately our cook (Mexon) became sick last night, and needed to descend, so our food is being cooked by the extremely capable Happson, our chief guide. We got away this morning with Alfred our guide. He started out slowly but sped up as soon as we told him “they are strong women”. Gav was feeling a bit rough when got into camp but has come good after a rest and an extra 1/2 tab of diamox.

Shira 1 camp - altitude 3500 metres. A short walk from base camp but still we were passed by the porters!

End of day 1 and we have completed the one and half hour walk to Shira 1 camp. We are now at 3,550 metres and are noticing the change. Had to ask the guides to speed up from a heartbreakingly slow shuffle 5 minutes after starting, pole pole – slow slow- is the motto. We are trying to make “haraka haraka”- fast fast the new plan… It is really dusty and HUgh has increased the dose of his preventer significantly.
